Who we are and Why we do it
Studio North Design was founded in 2001 by husband and wife team Dylan and Sabrina Jones, and focuses on the design of everyday objects of functional utility and spaces for living they inhabit. We believe that modern design that embodies solid material, proportion, joinery, and
timeless design can be difficult if not impossible to find, particularly
with respect to small objects for everyday life. As a consequence, we
set out to design and make pieces to fulfill needs in our own
experience; a place for letters, utensils, magazines, a chopping block,
shelves, or a tray.
The Material and Production
Over the years, we have developed a deep respect and appreciation for the woods of the Pacific Coastal forests and in particular, local softwoods, often neglected by furniture designers. Much of our work has been in Douglas Fir, a fine straight grained wood that has an amber color which deepens with age. All our pieces are crafted from solid wood and are finished by hand in our shop using traditional wood joinery techniques. And though we may draw our design inspiration from all over, all our pieces are crafted here in the US.
The Design Approach
As designer/makers, we are intimately involved in sourcing, design and production of everything that we do - whether it is an architectural project or a tiny fridge magnet. Wood used in our large furniture pieces is "downfall" from residential window and door industry. Our Chop Blocks and smaller home accessories are crafted from the offcuts of our furniture pieces. We continually strive to find new and creative ways to up-cycle because we believe that wood
used in its natural state with minimum processing and sourced in a
sensitive manner, is one of the most environmentally sensitive material
choices available.
